Dr. Z EZG-50 Head in Surf Green
The Dr. Z EZG-50 is
essentially their take on the classic Fender Blackface, and without a
doubt one of Humbucker Music's favorites. It has that definitive
American 6L6 clean sound with just the right amount of sparkle and
punch while retaining that thickness and warmth without muddying the
tone. Trust us, that's not easy to do, but Dr. Z absolutely
nailed it. You want Surf or Twang? No worries! The Dr
Z EZG-50 has it covered.
Mike Zaite (Dr Z himself) spent a great deal of time developing this amp. The beginnings of which came from a 6L6 baaed transformer designed for Dr. Z by Ken Fischer (Trainwreck). The output transformer has a very unique impedance not used by other American amp makers and is one of the primary contributors to the EZG-50s amazing tone. NOS Allen Bradley carbon comp resistors are used in all critical tone positions of the EZG-50 circuit. These classic resistors add a warmth and depth to the tone that only they can give.
And about the Reverb... Don't even get us started! The EZG-50 sports an all tube driven reverb circuit with both Dwell and Mix knobs. These controls allows the player to fine tune the amount of reverb to taste far better than a single knob. Anything from a hint of space to that deep, dark, massive, chamber the size of Notre Dame (the church not the college, sillyl!) can be had. Easily the most impressive reverb on any amp we've heard. And we've heard a lot!
You also get a full EQ and a Pre and Post master volume. On the back are 16, 8, and 4 ohm speaker outs to accommodate any cabinet. With 50 watts of clean power, 2 knob reverb, and a tube rectifier, the EZG-50 is the blackface head that never was. and as only Dr. Z could do it!

Dr Z Amps are officially UL/CSA certified! They're also CE certified for the rest of the world. To our knowledge, they are the only boutique amp manufacturer with models that are UL certified. It's a very long and expensive ordeal and rightfully so, they are quite proud to offer amps that are tested and certified for safety, reliability, and durability.
Dr. Z Amplification are tested and spot checked quarterly by ETL to insure their building methods and materials meet the strict requirements for certification.
Other than safety, why is this important? UL Certification also requires a manufacturer to build for durability and reliability. The chassis, solder points, transformers, etc have to meet certain criteria, such as:
Vibration : Such as withstanding a bumpy road in the back of your car.
Shock Resistance #1 : Shock, as in impact, not electricity. Not all amps survive a fall or accidental drop.
Shock Resistance #2 : Ok, now it's about electricity! :)
And the list goes on, but you get the picture.
The point is, it's truly rare, if not non-existant, that a hand-wired custom amplifier company puts themselves out there to be scrutinized by firms who literally spcialize in looking for reasons to shut them down. In our opinion, that speaks volumes about Dr. Z and their build quality. It gives us confidence in them, and in our opinion, it should you as well.
